Am I an idiot or....

During my drive home after class tonight, I could not get the thought out of my head that Evelyn knew more about the murder of Hollis than she, or the movie, led us to believe. There is no denying that she was knowingly misleading or ambiguous in much of her information she shared with Jake. The key piece of evidence to me was when Jake wanted to find Hollis to help him out. After much prodding, Evelyn finally told Jake that Hollis liked to spend time looking at rocks at Stone Canyon Reservoir. This is where the body of Hollis was discovered. I know the movie pointed us in the direction that Evelyn felt her father had a hand in the murder of Hollis, but did she actually know that her father did it? Why did she tell Jake the exact location of the murdered body? Did she witness the murder and the disposal of the body? Am I dwelling too much on this little fact?

  1. I've always thought that was weird too. ...I guess I always assumed that she knew, but couldn't/wouldn't reveal anything because it would lead to Noah right to Katherine, which was Evelyn's greatest fear.

  2. I think it might be more accurate to say she had suspicions about Hollis' murder. Her suspicious manner, though, derives more from her need to hide the true identity of Katherine, her sister/daughter. Evelyn has a femme fatale manner about her, but isn't at all. Jake simply interprets her (as we might) as such.

  3. I thought the same thing I thought....maybe she knew her father was at fault but didn't really have much to go on other than a gut feeling until jake said something about how he felt also. I also think she feared her father a great deal until she got some guts to leave.

  4. I feel there are many aspects of the plot that are left open to the viewers' interpretation. On one hand, it is nice to be able to leave a film and be able to think about all the different plot twists (and reach your own conclusions), but on the other hand, it leaves many questions unanswered. Maybe the writers purposely wanted it this way? That's why I ultimately ended up asking "Why?" Not because I didn't have a full understanding of the events in the film, but rather, the methods didn't make sense to me; I personally wasn't satisfied with the explanation of the events. Having said that, I'm not trying to imply I didn't like the film because I really did enjoy watching the movie.

  5. I don't think she had any part in murdering him, but I think it's quite possible she saw it or suspected it happened. When Jake asked her if she murdered Hollis she seemed rather genuine and indignant. She may have seen it but she didn't actually do anything to help. When she says to Jake that he doesn't understand how evil her father is and she could be referring to Hollis' murder. Also, the morning of Hollis' murder, she was out riding. Maybe she say something that way?

  6. I was thinking the same thing. How is it that she led Jake to where Hollis' body was found if she had nothing to do with the murder? I guess it was a coincidence.

  7. I agree, Barry. When Evelyn told Jake that, "Hollis didn't wear bi-focals," I wondered if she was not only attesting to Jake that she did not kill Hollis, but also that she knew her father killed him. She clearly didn't think her Father was incapable of it. Furthermore, I was curious when would have Hollis been home alone (without Evelyn present) that would have given time for the murder to take place without witness. -PK-

  8. Evelyn definitely seemed suspicious from the start, but I agree she was either there when her father killed her husband or knew he did it. I think that was one more reason why she was afraid him. What always sort of frustrates me about a lot of movies is that the characters withhold so much vital info from other characters that could help them early on that could solve, resolve, explain, etc. so much. But, then we'd probably have a very short boring movie.
