Some Discussion Questions

Think about how the role Dr. Frankenstein's wife plays is different from the role of the women in the other films and why.

  1. Thats an interesting thought considering that she is the only innocent female with a leading role in any of the films shown during class thus far. Elizabeth is honest and lacks a dark motive and seems to be void of any deep dark secrets that the other woman seem to possess.
This film lacks a literal femme fatale. It could be argued that Dr. Frankenstein's obsession with the creation of life takes the place of a woman as his mistress, which eliminates the need for a femme fatale. His scientific drive is the cause of his morbid situation rather than a captivating woman as seen in the noir films.

  2. I thought that Elizabeth was sort of like Ann, in Out of the Past, in that she was very forgiving when Frankenstein ditches their wedding to create his monster just as Ann was ditched by Jeff to deal with Kathie. Both Ann and Elizabeth were understanding of their men, even though it didn't turn out so well for Ann.

  3. I also thought Elizabeth was like Ann. They both are good, kind, and almost damsels waiting for their men to make up their mind to continue on a life together.
