Tarantino's World

Tarantino is an amazing film maker. He worked at a video store and got his knowledge really from the films themselves. He has built two worlds in his films, the real world and the movie world within Tarantino's world. Interesting stuff, here more on his world:

Hidden Universe
Expansive Tarantino Universe

Did anyone else catch the mention of Marsalis in Reservoir Dogs?
Does anyone know why he used the "n" word? Was it for shock? Or just cuz maybe it fits with these characters and their manner of expressing themselves? Maybe it's ok in Tarantino's world?

  1. Alabama was also mentioned by Mr. White. Alabama was played by Patricia Arquette in True Romance, which Tarantino wrote. It was hard to tell, but from what I've read, the cigarettes being smoked were Red Apple, which is a brand Tarantino made up and has appeared in quite a few of his movies.

  2. I did catch the mention of Marcellus, but I dont know why the "n word" was used so much. Honestly it became unnecessary considering there really weren't too many interactions with black people in the film to begin with. I presume it was just a matter of showing how small minded and bigoted these characters personalities were. Even the scene where Steve Buscemi tells the other guys they are "acting like a bunch of N-words", which clearly shows they felt they were above or better than black people, and thats one thing about some of Tarantinos movies that kind of bugs me.

  3. I agree that his movies use the "N" word way too much. but I think he's trying to prove a point or bring something to our attention. Some of it goes with the territory of the movie. The time period and type of characters that use it. I'm surprised how often I hear people (no matter their color) these days use it. I don't remember people saying it much growing up; it was disrespectful. I think because it's said in music so much maybe. Some people want to diffuse it's meaning, while others still don't like it.

  4. Tarantino has a tendency to use that particular racial slur frequently in his films. after listening to various interviews with Tarantino he certainly doesn't come off as a racist by any means. I would assume its just part of this dark world he is creating through his films, where their aren't many typical good guys, and there are plenty of shady characters.

  5. The very first scene of this film shows just how small minded these characters are. I agree the "n" word seemed unnecessary but I also think it fit with the characters personalities. Tarantino makes these characters seem almost mindless, willing to follow anyone to make a quick buck.

  6. Yeah I picked up the Marcellus reference in the film, make's me wonder if he had plans to use the character in a future movie. Also there was a reference to Alabama who was Patricia Arquette's character in True Romance which Tarantino wrote. Can't recall but wasn't Vince Vega mentioned as well who is Vic's brother and Travolta's character in Pulp Fiction.

Yeah the usage of the N word seemed a little much at times and I know Spike Lee has been critical about Tarantino doing this. Samuel L Jackson has also gone to bat for Tarantino and his usage of the word.
